“We chose Capita for this project due to their excellent credentials in the healthcare market and a track record for technology delivery within a specified budget.”

NHS Grampian delivers healthcare services to nearly half a million people, spread over 3,000 square miles, in urban and rural communities in Scotland.
Capita partnered with NHS Grampian to install what is currently the world’s largest Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) of its kind. The overall objective was to create “a paperless hospital bedside” – and a system which would harness information technology to drive efficiency, improve patient care, and maximise valuable staff time.
The contract with NHS Grampian has seen Capita installing what is currently Cisco’s largest Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) deployment in the healthcare market worldwide, for its powerful 1142 Access Point.
The wireless network supports three hospitals, and integrates seamlessly with existing security and authentication methods on the organisation’s existing network.
Operational since October 2009, the system is delivering significant improvements in efficiency and patient care. A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system was also implemented in 2010. This is a portable asset-tracking solution which helps trace the location of vital medical equipment.
An example of how innovative IT can be tailored and harnessed to support an organisation’s overall aims, the new WLAN has made the “paperless hospital bedside” a reality.
Medical staff now have anytime/anywhere access to patient data as well as real-time access to patient information and electronic medical records. And the historic reliance on pagers has all but been dispensed of with the introduction of a VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) platform for use on Wi-Fi handsets. Armed with intelligent, user-friendly IT, medical staff have more time to focus on the organisation’s core aim of providing excellent medical care to the local community.
This partnership is delivering a range of benefits to NHS Grampian including:
- Better use of resources
The new WLAN allows for secure anytime/anywhere access to medical records, avoiding wasted time and resources.
- Boosted staff productivity
Medical staff are now supported by flexible, user-friendly IT, allowing them to focus on core objectives.
- Vital equipment tracked immediately
Portable asset-tracking solution locates vital medical equipment quickly and easily.
- Seamless integration and authentication
New IT integrates seamlessly with existing systems and authentication methods.
- Successful installation of the world’s largest Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) of its kind
